9 Month Old Showing No Signs of Crawling? How Ours Shifted Overnight

If you’re currently sitting on Google at 11 PM searching “9 month old showing no signs of crawling,” take a deep breath.

Two weeks before turning 10 months old, our daughter was showing absolutely zero interest in moving across the floor.

I was genuinely convinced she was going to skip crawling entirely.

Then, literally overnight, a switch flipped.

First came a clumsy shuffle. Two weeks later? Holy crap, she’s zooming.

I swear I put her down on her safe playmat behind me, turn around for a split second to make a cup of tea, turn back, and she’s moved halfway across the room.

The next moment, she’s grabbing a chair leg and pulling herself up to stand.

If your baby seems completely stationary right now, here is what that sudden, chaotic 9.5 month developmental explosion actually looks like when it hits.

The Sudden 9.5-Month Cognitive Explosion

It wasn’t just physical movement that turned on like a light switch; her mental understanding exploded at the exact same time:

  • Intentional Copycat Clapping: She was clapping before, but now she mirrors speed. If I clap fast, she claps fast. If I do one massive, slow clap, she hits one big clap back.
  • Babbling with Purpose: The noise levels have increased. The words aren’t fully formed yet, but they have intent. “A!” is a sharp shout to get attention. “Bab-bab-bab” is super close to Dad, and “ma-ma-ma-ma” is keeping Mammy happy.
  • The Royal Wave: No longer an accidental arm flail, she now holds her hand up right next to her face and gives a deliberate wave goodbye.
  • Learning Phrases: We taught her “arms up!” when changing her top the other day. She didn’t learn it by passive observation over months; she picked it up in one afternoon simply by listening to us. Seeing a baby learn an instruction on purpose is just, woah!

Enter the “Bear Crawl”

Because she’s been holding my hands and plodding around the house standing up since about four months old, I thought walking would be first.

She was doing everything in her power not to crawl. Had no interest.

Now she has learned to crawl, I don’t think she’s going to be doing it for very long, or at least the normal way.

She seems to be wanting to invent her own technique: the bear crawl.

Instead of resting on both knees like a classic hands-and-knees crawl, she crawls with one leg straight out, supporting her weight on her hands and the sole of her foot with her bottom sticking up in the air.

She’s testing her leg strength, using furniture to cruise around the room, and practically jumping between the sofa and the coffee table.

The Physical Toll on Dad

By 3 PM on Sunday, I realised I was tired, yawning left and right!

If your baby isn’t crawling yet, stop worrying, enjoy the sit down phase while it lasts!

We aren’t just sitting on the floor playing quietly anymore.

Dad life has shifted into full-blown active 24hr supervision job:

  1. Following two feet behind her at all times.
  2. Picking her up so she doesn’t crack her head on table corners.
  3. Keeping her away from the dog’s water bowl (and keeping the dog away from her).

Navigating these challenging 9-month-old behaviour changes is equal parts thrilling and knackering.

If your 9 month old is showing zero signs of crawling today, don’t worry, you might just wake up tomorrow to a baby who won’t sit still.

If you need me, I’ll be on the sofa resting my back before the next lap of the living room.
