This Hauck safety gate review comes after 10 months of continuous, daily use with both a dog and a mobile 10-month-old.
Just to be 100% transparent: Hauck haven’t paid me a penny for this review, nor have I received any freebies. This is a genuine review of a product I bought with my own money that solved a real problem in our home!
When we first brought our baby home, we bought one gate purely to keep our dog downstairs so we had a stress free space with the newborn.
Fast forward to today, and we now own two: one for the bottom of the stairs and one for the top.
Here is my honest take on how they install, how they hold up over time, and whether they are worth buying for your home.

Why I Chose Hauck Pressure Fit Gates
When looking for safety gates, I had three non-negotiable requirements:
- Fits Wide Staircases: Finding a gate that could cleanly bridge our 100cm staircase gap without feeling flimsy was harder than I expected.
- Zero Drilling / Wall Damage: As a new dad, I simply didn’t have time to be drilling holes into doorframes or walls. Plus, I’m not great at DIY—I’d probably mess it up and leave raw plaster hanging out!
- Budget-Friendly: Babies (and their gear) are expensive enough as it is. Coming in around the £25 to £40 mark per gate felt extremely reasonable.
Managing the Dog & Newborn Dynamic
Initially, these were strictly dog gates.
When preparing our house for a newborn, we needed an easy way to give ourselves space without worrying about tripping over Benny, our dog, or having to give him constant attention when our hands were full.
If you have a dog and a newborn, these do the job perfectly.
The double-locking mechanism means your dog simply will not be able to open it, no matter how much interest they take in what’s happening on the other side.

Ease of Use & Daily Operation
The best feature for everyday parenting is that you can easily open it one-handed while carrying a baby, a washing basket, or a bottle:
- The Mechanism: You slide back a soft yellow clip on the handle, lift the gate slightly, and swing it open.
- Childproof Safety: My daughter can reach up and touch the bars, but she cannot reach the top handle. Even if she could, she doesn’t have the dexterity to pull the slider and lift simultaneously.
Installation & Minor Drawbacks
While I love these gates, writing a fair Hauck safety gate review means pointing out a couple of minor niggles:
- The Setup Faff: Pressure gates rely on tension screws at each corner to pull the frame into alignment. Getting the gate level so that the door pin meets the latch perfectly takes some trial and error. Fine-tuning those screws took longer than putting the actual gate together, but once you figure out how the tension works, it’s straightforward.
- The Colour Choice: They came in silver/grey. My wife wasn’t overly impressed at first—she would have preferred white to match the woodwork—but given how tired we were with a newborn, she just wanted something safe that worked!

After 10 months of continuous, hard daily use, both gates still feel as sturdy and safe as the day I put them up.
When my daughter started crawling, I went round with a wrench to tighten the tension screws just in case, but they budge at all when she got her hands on them trying to escape downstairs.
