A few days ago, I wrote an honest post about the challenging 9-month-old behaviour changes we’re currently battling, from changing mat escapes to baby biting.
But parenting isn’t all backaches and battle-cries!
For every chaotic moment at this stage, there’s an absolute golden milestone that makes you stop, smile, and think: “Yeah, this dad gig is pretty awesome.”

1. Independent Play
It is absolute bliss to finally sit back, drink a warm cup of coffee, and watch her pick up a toy and entertain herself.
She doesn’t play in the traditional sense yet.
It’s more picking something up, waving it about furiously, bashing it against a second toy in her other hand, or throwing it across the room and crawling after it.
But hey, it counts as independent play!
2. “Dancing”
Whenever we put music on, she starts “dancing.”
It’s less strict rhythm and more of a enthusiastic wiggle and head bop.
If I say the word “Dance!”, she instantly starts moving.
She hasn’t got a sense of beat ; she’s just copying us.
I didn’t think I danced around the house often enough for her to pick it up (or that my moves were that bad), but here we are.
3. Waving at Everyone (and Everything)
She has unlocked waving, and now the entire world gets a royal greeting.
If we go out for lunch, she’s sitting in her highchair waving at the people on the table next to us.
She waves at Mam, me, she waves at her grandparents when they arrive and leave, and sometimes when she’s playing, I’ll give her a little wave from across the room just to check in.
She waves back every single time, and it can even help calm her down.
4. Loud, Excited Clapping
If she’s happy, she claps.
If you start clapping, she claps back.
At first, I think she was just clapping for the sake of making noise, but now her claps are getting faster and louder.
The huge, proud smile on her face when she does it is genuinely unbeatable.
5. Babbling
Her vocal skills are exploding right now.
Nothing makes proper sense yet, but she’s starting to drop sounds that sound suspiciously like “E-I-E-I-O” from Old MacDonald Had a Farm.
- “AH!” ➔ Her default setting for getting immediate attention.
- “Bababab” ➔ Her favourite random noise.
- “Mamama” ➔ We are dangerously close to her first proper word!
6. Actually Consuming Solid Foods
We’ve been doing solid foods for a while, but lately, she has transitioned from just smushing food into her hair to actually chewing and trying to eat it.
She’s starting to taste the actual meals we’re eating at the table now, which makes family mealtimes so much better (even if most of the broccoli florets still end up feeding the dog, who is slowly getting fat from baby food drops!).
7. Supported Walking (And Dog Chasing!)
My lower back might be upset, but holding her hands while she waddles around on two feet is pure joy.
The giggles we get as she “runs” around the living room chasing the dog are fantastic. She thinks she’s a big girl now that she’s on her feet!
8. Safe Crawling Adventures in the Garden
Now that she is crawling everywhere and trying to pull herself up on anything that isn’t nailed down, finding “safe zones” can be tough.
Our garden has turned out to be the best playground.
It’s mainly grass, so there aren’t many hard surfaces for her to pull herself up on or fall on.
We pop down a massive picnic blanket, let her crawl around on the lawn, and enjoy the fresh air while we lie back and relax.
9. Endless Games of Peekaboo
Do I even need to explain this one?
Peekaboo is an absolute classic.
We can spend twenty minutes hiding behind sofa cushions, tea towels, or our hands, and every single “PEEKABOO!” results in belly-laughs.
It never gets old.
10. Bath Time Confidence
She has always loved the water, but now that she can sit up comfortably without falling over, bath time is a blast.
She sits surrounded by her bath toys, splashing the water, and even attempting to crawl around in the tub.
Watching her confidence grow in the water every week is amazing.
Final Thoughts: Enjoy the Chaos!
The 9 to 10-month stage is exhausting, but it is also full of incredible firsts.
Between the clapping, the supported walking, and the adorable head-bopping, watching their little personality shine through makes all those sleepless nights completely worth it.
